Walk On!

Friday, August 13th, 2010

I love to walk, I love the way it makes my legs feel, the way it stretches my muscles and lubricates them to move more swiftly. It’s exhilarating to put my feet to the pavement, extend my stride, and press through my course; through the hills, valleys, and sharp turns until I have made it safely home. The benefits of exercising my muscles and the endorphins released are an added blessing that encourages me to walk on. Often times when life is overwhelming I stop what I’m doing and go for a walk. I take a walk with God and walk through whatever is pressing to weigh me down.

In Psalm23, David says, “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death…” I love the fact that he says “I walk through”. Meaning don’t take up residence with your trials…don’t dwell in them…don’t entertain them for the day and especially for the night. Instead move forward…walk on…there are better things waiting your attention!

There is nothing worse then letting your trials, your fears, you failures, and your disappointments defeat you. Letting them physically and emotionally get the best of you does nothing but cause greater fear, deeper pain, and increased frustration. A defeated mind-set only robs you of the blessings received through walking on and letting God work out the details of your situation.

I can testify, there have been many times when I’ve allowed my discouragement to hold me back. I’ve allowed a situation to get the best of me—to cause me to sit and wallow in it, like a dog digging through the trash seeking to satisfy his unending hunger. When you stop to stress over a situation, you soon loose sight of reality! You loose perspective of what is important. Your thinking has been plagued by selfish wants and wisdom has been sabotaged by what you classify as your “rights.”

Mentally and physically you weaken. You loose the muscle strength you’ve built from “pressing on” through the pain and the mental discipline from “overcoming doubt”. Although, pierced by guilt and baffled by a “no win” battle….you soon give up. You surrender to God, which is where it should have been to begin with. In due time you look back and see that nothing was gained from dwelling in the trials, except wasted energy and time.

Thankfully we serve a God of grace with un-ending love for His children. After we have suffered for a while see what God promise to do for us?

“After I have suffered for a little while, the God of grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen and establish you.” (1Peter 5:10)

God’s grace doesn’t leave us in the pit of guilt but instead He promises to continue His work in us. I don’t know about you but I need His assurance. I need to know that God’s grace never gives up on me. I need to be reminded that His grace never stops because I stop…because I falter. Instead, His grace continues to perfect me into HIS image, to confirm who I am through HIS word, to strengthen me through the trials, and to continue to establish me as HIS child with purpose. HIS promise to personally continue to shape and mold me is what gives me the will…the hope…..to walk on!

Do you need to stop dwelling on your issues…your trials and walk on? Let me encourage you to renew your hope in God’s grace. WALK ON! Be assured that He is Himself is perfecting, confirming, strengthening and establishing you.

The Question Is…Are You Moving Forward?

Friday, July 9th, 2010

I was out for my morning walk at Crocket Park when I had just walked by two girls running, and thought that’s what I need to be doing! The man coming up behind them must have noticed my discouraging glare and said nicely, “You are walking faster than me!”

It was sweet of him to encourage me; although his words made me think how we are all on journeys each moving at a different pace. Some of us are running, some jogging, some moving at a fast walk, and some at a steady pace. Perhaps a few may feel like they are just crawling along. The important thing is whether we’re moving in a clear direction with a desire to achieve definite results. Do we admire those that move at a faster pace? YES! Are there times when we need to up the momentum? YES! When we need greater results, then it may require us to up the pace, to sweat more, and to intentionally push past our comfort zone.

The question isn’t necessarily how fast are we going but where we are going and if we are intentionally moving towards it?

Are you taking steps to move forward in life? If not, there is a good chance that you are wandering aimlessly, progressing backwards or at a standstill.

Hebrews 12:1-2 says, Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

There are three instructions we can gain from this Truth:

1. Run with endurance; walk with endurance…crawl with endurance. Whatever you do…MOVE FORWARD! Move through the hard times, move through the pain, move through the failure, and move through the fear!!! The important thing is don’t stop and don’t give up! 2 Timothy 4:7 says, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”

2. Put off anything that is weighing you down, anything that is enslaving you, anything that is distracting you and keeping you from focusing on the race God has called you to. Admit and be rid of any sin that separates you from The Author of your faith—Jesus Christ. “You were running a good race. Who cut in on you and kept you from obeying the truth?” Galatians 5:7

3. Fix your eyes on Jesus and NOT on the other runners and what they are doing or aren’t doing. Jesus is the One who empowers you. He is the One who knows the path you should take and the distance you have to travel. He is the One who already knows what you need to persevere through. He is the author of your journey from beginning to the end. “But seek first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” Matthew 6:33

I know you have probably heard these instructions before but they still hold true today and will continue to hold true for the rest of your journey. I desperately needed to be reminded of this Truth especially to put off anything that weighs you down. I needed to hear and apply this truth so I could be set free to run with endurance the race God has set for me.

So Be It!!!

Saturday, April 3rd, 2010

It took place in the Garden of Gethsemane right before the soldiers were to come and take him away to be crucified. Jesus knowing what was to come was feeling overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death.

“Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch for me.”
Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”
Jesus prayed this prayer two more times. The second time he said, “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may Your will be done.” Matthew 26:36-42

Jesus didn’t plead with God to persuade him to change his plan—he pleaded for another way. Jesus wanted and understood that God’s purpose had to be filled for the salvation of his people. This was a time where the sacrifice would take more than His life; it would take a suffering beyond what any of us could ever endure. It would take strength beyond our strongest ability. It was a decision that would alter the course of life—of my life—of your life—for eternity. I don’t believe there was ever a moment when Jesus doubted his willingness to follow through with his decision. He had decided long before this moment that He would fulfill the will of his Father.  “For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.”John 6:38 Jesus attitude was “So be it!” If there is no other way than “So be it”. Whatever it takes I WILL PAY THE PRICE!

If this is what it takes for my children to have a relationship with me…than so be it!
If this is what it takes for my children to have forgiveness…than so be it!
If this is what it takes for my children to have freedom from the guilt and curse of sin…than so be it!
If this is what it takes for my children to have victory over Satan…than so be it!
If this is what it takes for my children to have life abundantly…than so be it!
If this is what it takes for the price of sin to be paid once and for all…than so be it!
“Father if this is what it takes for your will to be done…than so be it!”

I can’t even begin to grasp the magnitude of the burden that took Jesus to His knees that day and ultimately to the cross. I can’t imagine the aching love felt for each of us as He saw our faces through His eyes of grace. What I can imagine, because I experience it daily, is an outpouring of His love as He pours out his forgiveness and relentless grace on me faithfully.

1John 4:10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
